Photo album from this years race Click the thumbnail for the full size image Its been kind of busy since the race but I finally got to sit down and go through them. It’s already spring but we are looking at another snowstorm with high wind coming in tonight. We had a week or more… Continue reading Iditarod 2024 Photos

More Iditarod photos from yesterday
Here are some more photographs taken on March 9. I have more that I haven’t processed yet. Temperature got up to above zero during the afternoon but still pretty windy. I had to bring the camera in after the morning as the cold was affecting pretty much everything electronic. I’ll try and get out today… Continue reading More Iditarod photos from yesterday
Iditarod Photo Album
I went through most of my photos and have processed most of the ones I like. I might have a couple more but Lynn and I have to get ready to leave on our trip tomorrow. A few more teams are coming in today but I won’t be able to get down there. Weather is… Continue reading Iditarod Photo Album
Back in Galena
Long flight home The weather in Arkansas was warm and sunny when I headed back to Galena. I graduated from crutches to a cane before I headed back so getting around was a little easier. I knew that Fairbanks was going to be a lot colder but I really didn’t want to wear heavy winter… Continue reading Back in Galena
Iditarod Comes to Galena
Iditarod and other news Of course we all know what is dominating the news cycle lately. Not going to perpetuate that issue. I’ve been continuing with my run training. I still kind of have a hard time getting out and running at -30F but I’ll get there. Lynn and I had to cancel our trip… Continue reading Iditarod Comes to Galena
Moose in the mirror
Lots more snow lately. Even the moose have taken to walking in trails and driveways, (can’t really blame them), instead of breaking trail just to get to food. Lynn was backing into our driveway this afternoon and had to wait while this moose calf finished trimming the brush beside our driveway. Last night as I… Continue reading Moose in the mirror
Back outside for a while, (I hope)
I’ve mostly been running on a treadmill this week. As much as I detest running on those, it is just hard to get motivated to run outside when it is -30F and colder. I know I should, but I chickened out and ran inside on the coldest days. Some places have treadmills that are positioned… Continue reading Back outside for a while, (I hope)
Unmistakeable signs of the first real cold snap
We listen to the weather forecasts but you never know how accurate they are. We knew it was finally going to get winter here and of course we’ve seen this before. Lynn and I live in a cabin, cabins are great but they are not nearly as well insulated as some of the more modern… Continue reading Unmistakeable signs of the first real cold snap
Springtime in Galena
The weather has started warming up here. We had a fairly normal winter this year with -50℉ or so as the lowest temperature. Just cold enough to prevent us from using our propane for a while. Assuming we don’t have any sudden long cold spells for the rest of this year we still have firewood… Continue reading Springtime in Galena
Too cold for propane
The temperature had been around -42℉ for most of the day, then Lynn tried to use the stove and it wouldn’t light. I checked the weather and found that we had finally got down below -44℉. The boiling point of propane is -44.1℉ so propane appliances don’t work below this temp. It should get a… Continue reading Too cold for propane
