I saw the first barge of the year as I was running home from work and had to stop and take a picture. Yesterday there was a significant amount of driftwood in the river and a fair amount of ice mixed in. The river seemed to be mostly clear of drift today but that normally… Continue reading First Barge of 2021

Yukon River Breakup in Progress
Shortly after my last post the ice on the river here at Galena moved far enough for the tripod to fall. I didn’t go near the river till Monday morning so I wasn’t aware of it until I was running in to work. I stopped long enough to take a couple of pictures with my… Continue reading Yukon River Breakup in Progress
Springtime is here
Breakup time is getting close I haven’t posted since moose season, partly because there wasn’t a lot of opportunity to get out. Travel in and out of town, and most other activities were restricted all winter. Vaccines are here and at last count about 80% of eligible residents received their shots. We aren’t back to… Continue reading Springtime is here
Spring Breakup and more
RIP Snowball 2009-2020 Starting off this post with sad news. Our dog Snowball had to be flown in to town due to being in severe distress and never got to come home. She developed a very serious medical condition and after consultation with the veterinarians in North Pole we had to make the best decision… Continue reading Spring Breakup and more
Waiting for breakup
Social distancing in bush Alaska So now we are doing “social distancing”, I suppose Galena is ahead of the most of the lower 48 since we are 270 air miles from the nearest large city, (Fairbanks). As far as I know most of the villages off the road system have halted passenger flights into and… Continue reading Waiting for breakup
Waiting for breakup
Waiting for breakup to start and it doesn’t look like it should be too far away. The weather is warm, all the snow is gone off the ground and the days are getting warm. I was riding my four-wheeler wearing a short sleeve shirt today so the weather is pretty nice. We are hoping this… Continue reading Waiting for breakup
The house when we left
This is our house at the time we left looking from the road. I got the boat out after the picture was taken and took it to the school so we could use it to get out. I don’t know how much higher the water got but I assume it went up considerably after we… Continue reading The house when we left
Evacuated to town
I am sending this post from Ft Wainwright lodging. Lynn, Snowball and I were evacuated early this morning. We had to travel to the airport via jet boat as all of the roads were under several feet of water. We were only able to take a few items from the house before the water rose… Continue reading Evacuated to town
Ice jam update
The ice stopped running yesterday evening and the water rapidly backed up into the lakes and creeks around town. Water level has been pretty stable all night. The elder center had to be evacuated yesterday when water started coming over the road but since then the water level has receded somewhat. The ice is jammed… Continue reading Ice jam update
Ice running on the Yukon 26 May, 2013
Here is a video I shot this morning when the ice was running.
