The ice moved today but was stopped by the time I got down to the river. The water is still low, about 104 feet. It was a little cooler today than it has been, in fact I saw a few snowflakes this morning. It will be nice to be able to get my boat in… Continue reading The ice moved in Galena !
Waiting for breakup
Waiting for breakup to start and it doesn’t look like it should be too far away. The weather is warm, all the snow is gone off the ground and the days are getting warm. I was riding my four-wheeler wearing a short sleeve shirt today so the weather is pretty nice. We are hoping this… Continue reading Waiting for breakup
More 2014 Iditarod Pictures
Here are some more pictures from the 2014 Iditarod at Galena. Most of these pictures were made from the river before the checkpoint.
2014 Iditarod
The 2014 Iditarod finally made it in to Galena. I missed the first few teams as they came in pretty early. The weather is nice, not too cold and very little wind. We were told the first teams probably wouldn’t make it in until late Friday but I think the first one came in early… Continue reading 2014 Iditarod
Finally got some firewood in!
With help from a couple of co-workers my chainsaw is now running after being completely submerged in water from the flood. I have a cord of dry wood in the yard and finally got to build a fire tonight. The timing couldn’t be better as the weather is returning to temperatures that are a bit… Continue reading Finally got some firewood in!
Heat Wave
We have been having very warm weather here lately. It gets above freezing for a good portion of the day. The weather is more like early spring than January. There is a lot of overflow on the creeks and lakes making travel fairly hazardous. These pictures show the weird property of snow around here when… Continue reading Heat Wave
Getting Water
I finally got the snow machine broke in enough to haul water. We had a fairly good snowfall yesterday so I wasn’t able to get the four wheeler out of the driveway. My water hauling tank holds 150 gallons so it was a pretty heavy load even for this machine. Lynn had lots of laundry… Continue reading Getting Water
Too cold for propane
The temperature had been around -42℉ for most of the day, then Lynn tried to use the stove and it wouldn’t light. I checked the weather and found that we had finally got down below -44℉. The boiling point of propane is -44.1℉ so propane appliances don’t work below this temp. It should get a… Continue reading Too cold for propane
Finally Back in Galena
Well, we are finally back in Galena after spending a couple of days in Fairbanks shopping. Snowball was happy to see Victoria and we are glad to have a weekend to unwind and get ready for work next week. I have posted a few pictures of Victoria’s graduation. It snowed about 14 inches in the… Continue reading Finally Back in Galena
