RIP Snowball 2009-2020 Starting off this post with sad news. Our dog Snowball had to be flown in to town due to being in severe distress and never got to come home. She developed a very serious medical condition and after consultation with the veterinarians in North Pole we had to make the best decision… Continue reading Spring Breakup and more

More utilities restored
More utilities have been restored to Galena. All cell phone service is back and power has been restored to most of the town. Both stores are back in service. The road repairs to the dump are progressing. As soon as I get the chance I will post a few photographs.
Recovery update
I have been back in Galena for a few days and we are slowly getting infrastructure back. I am staying in the dorms and will give more updates later.
The house when we left
This is our house at the time we left looking from the road. I got the boat out after the picture was taken and took it to the school so we could use it to get out. I don’t know how much higher the water got but I assume it went up considerably after we… Continue reading The house when we left
Evacuated to town

Here is a video I shot this morning when the ice was running.
High water level on the Yukon
The river has reached 125 feet which is the first stage at which we take action for flooding. People are starting to move out of the “Old Town” site in Galena to get to higher ground. The riverwatch team landed here and informed us of a large ice jam just downriver.
First flooding in Galena
The water at theĀ pilings have reached 125 feet which is the first stage of flooding here. There is a large ice jam at Bishop Rock downstream and the ice run has slowed considerably.
The ice is moving!
The ice started moving here at about 5:30 this morning. So far the water level has been up to around 121 feet or so. When the ice started moving there were reports that three moose were crossing the river and got trapped on the ice. Not an unusual occurrence here. So far we have only… Continue reading The ice is moving!
