I got a call today just after 1:00 PM today from the AmeriCorps rep here in Galena and they told me that they had people available to help me put the insulation under my house. When I got off work today at 4:00PM they were mostly done! They did a great job and are coming… Continue reading Thank you AmeriCorps !

Washer and dryer installed and running
We now have a functioning washer and dryer. Lynn is catching up on our laundry. I have a lot of homework to do this weekend but I will try and get the tub surround installed in the bathroom this weekend.
We have hot water!
I ran a little conduit today and we now have two more circuits in the utility room for the water pump and our on-demand hot water heater. We now have hot and cold running water in the kitchen. Next step is to install the tub surround so we can have a working shower. Also I… Continue reading We have hot water!
More house repairs done
Finally got the water pump and tank hooked up today. Cabinets are complete and the sink has been installed in the kitchen. I have some conduit to run tomorrow and the utility room should be ready for the washer/dryer. As soon as the tub surround is put in we should be in good shape. I… Continue reading More house repairs done
Moose Season is Open!
The early moose season is open here and I have already seen one successful hunter come back with a nice moose. Still a little early for the rut though and work is keeping us pretty busy. I plan on going out later in the season. The water has dropped a little but not so much… Continue reading Moose Season is Open!
First time on the Yukon this year

Normally I would have been using it to get firewood and scout for moose but this year we have had to spend every moment we could getting the house repairs done. We went upriver a little ways… Continue reading First time on the Yukon this year
Slowly recovering from the flood
I have included a few pictures of before the flood and after we returned. The water came up higher than the 1945 flood and came within 6 inches of overflowing the dike around the base. Lucky for us the base was untouched and has its own water, power, an sewer. We have a small boiler… Continue reading Slowly recovering from the flood
More utilities restored
More utilities have been restored to Galena. All cell phone service is back and power has been restored to most of the town. Both stores are back in service. The road repairs to the dump are progressing. As soon as I get the chance I will post a few photographs.
Recovery update
I have been back in Galena for a few days and we are slowly getting infrastructure back. I am staying in the dorms and will give more updates later.
The house when we left
This is our house at the time we left looking from the road. I got the boat out after the picture was taken and took it to the school so we could use it to get out. I don’t know how much higher the water got but I assume it went up considerably after we… Continue reading The house when we left
