About

Lynn and I moved to Galena, Alaska in 2008 with our youngest daughter.  Lynn is a high school math teacher and I work in the IT department of the school. Galena is a small town on the Yukon River about 270 air miles or 400 river miles west of Fairbanks. There are no roads connecting Galena to the road system so all travel is via air or river. The river is frozen over from October to May so air travel is the main mode of transportation to and from Galena.

After breakup, which usually occurs the second week of May, the Yukon serves as our highway to town and supplies us with driftwood to use as fuel during the long winter months. Freeze up usually occurs in October and the river is passable by snow machine sometime in November.

  1. My wife and I met you and Lynn on the train from Fairbanks to Anchorage in late May of this year. You were on the way to Anchorage to buy your truck. We enjoyed our talks and all insight you gave us about living in rural Alaska. I follow the Galena temps and watch for new posts on your blog. Been up to Alaska 10 times in the last 11 years but don’t know if we will make it this year. We probably will tour the Rockies in our new motor home but still have thoughts of just driving to Alaska because we like it so much. Keep the info and pictures coming and enjoy your new house.
