How not to fall on the ice

Lynn falls on the ice

The big news this week is that Lynn sustained a fairly serious injury when she fell on the ice. She was walking and slipped, she tried to break her fall with her right hand and ended up with at least two fractures in her wrist. After going to the clinic and getting a temporary brace she returned to class and finished teaching the rest of the day. The pain medications they gave her made her sick so she took the next day off. We got a more substantial cast put on in Friday and we are heading into town on Monday so she can see an orthopedic surgeon. We don’t know yet if she will have surgery so we just have to wait and see. For the time being we will be eating my cooking as she isn’t able to work in the kitchen.

The iron dog came through Galena as usual this year but the weather conditions have made for a very unusual race. We are far above our normal -40 temperatures and for at least 40 miles on the southern part of the race they were driving on dirt. At least one machine sunk through the ice on the coast but the driver was ok. I heard that on  the approach to Nome they had to negotiate a blizzard so I guess they are getting a little bit of everything this year. I’m sure the snow conditions are resulting in some pretty banged up machines and riders.

Its pretty windy today and we were supposed to get a fair amount of snow but we only got an inch or so. I’ll post again when we find out what the doctor says in town.
