We finally got to make our train trip and it was worth the wait. The train between Fairbanks and Anchorage is the Denali Star. If you visit the interior and want to see a good cross section of the state this is definitely the way to do it. The trip from Fairbanks to Anchorage is 358 miles long and takes about 12 hours. The cars are very comfortable and there is an outside viewing deck on the rear of the car. We got three good meals in the dining car and met some really nice people on our way down. The staff is very knowledgeable about the route and the engineer would slow down when there was a particularly interesting thing to see. The weather could have been a little better for photography but we still got some good views. I tried to get some shots that really show the area but my skill with a camera just doesn’t do the scenery justice. Take my word for it, you need to see this with your own eyes. Denali was just barely visible at a couple of spots but didn’t show up very well in photographs. We saw several moose on the way down. All in all it was very enjoyable and I would recommend this to anyone visiting the state.
