Long flight home

The weather in Arkansas was warm and sunny when I headed back to Galena. I graduated from crutches to a cane before I headed back so getting around was a little easier. I knew that Fairbanks was going to be a lot colder but I really didn’t want to wear heavy winter clothes all day but I did carry my coat with me in case my bag didn’t make it.

Foot injury update

I got into Fairbanks a little after midnight, got my rental car and headed to the hotel for a little sleep. I had another checkup with the orthopedic surgeon at 10:00 and an eye appointment at 3:15. My foot is healing well and I was told to ditch the cane and walking boot. I still can’t run for another 6 weeks. Lots of rehab and weight training in the mean time. She doesn’t want me to ride my bike for now due to the chance of injuring my foot if I crash. In the evening I met up with Lynn and the swim team, they are in town for a meet but our schedules precluded me eating dinner with them.

As you can see from this picture the weather a just a little bit cooler in Fairbanks, it was around -30F when I boarded the plane for the flight home.

The picture above shows the Yukon River and mountains to the south. This was taken as we were headed toward the runway on the west side of Galena. You can clearly see where the channel is in the river.

Getting ready to land. Once we got on the ground I had to walk over to the school and get our truck and head home. It hadn’t snowed much since I left but we were forecast for a storm later in the evening. I spent most of the evening getting a fire going and warming the house up.

As forecast we had a pretty good snow overnight which is continuing right now. It isn’t really that cold but the wind is blowing about 20-30 mph. Cocoa and I went out for a walk around noon. This is the weather she really loves, what she doesn’t understand is why we aren’t running.

Here is a view looking down the dump road. I turned us around about 1/2 mile from the house. She wanted to keep going but I haven’t been walking without crutches or a cane since September and didn’t want to overdo it.

It’s kind of hard to tell from this picture but we were walking directly into a hard wind with plenty of snow. I go back to work in the morning and it looks like I have a lot of snow to move before I head out. Not much else to report right now. Stay warm.
