Social distancing in bush Alaska
So now we are doing “social distancing”, I suppose Galena is ahead of the most of the lower 48 since we are 270 air miles from the nearest large city, (Fairbanks). As far as I know most of the villages off the road system have halted passenger flights into and out of their airports except for medical emergencies. Also, snow machine travel between villages is prohibited. As long as no one in town is sick we should be good.
Warming weather
The weather was below 0F earlier last week but last couple of days it has gone above freezing. Because of the amount of snow we have on the ground the biggest effect is that driving and walking is difficult. The roads are now smooth and slick. Eventually the dirt shows through and then we get the mud. I haven’t seen any bears yet, I’m keeping my eyes open on my runs because it won’t be long before they are out and about.
As you can see from the pictures the moose have pretty well stripped most of the willows out of the grass lake behind our house.
Snowball really likes this weather, its a bit more pleasant for her to get out and play right now.
Breakup is next
The next big thing on our horizon is breakup. Currently the river forecast center is predicting an above average chance for flooding this year. Not surprising considering the amount of snow we have had. Hopefully it won’t be too bad, maybe I will try and get some good pictures this year. Right now I am still training for a race in August that may or may not happen. Either way I’m going to proceed with the assumption that it is. Ducks haven’t started arriving yet either but I’m sure that won’t be long.
Well, I’ll try and get something else out soon. Bye for now and stay safe.
