Snowball and I decided to try and get some of our chores done inside today. Temps outside were indicating right at -50F on the outside thermometer. I needed to catch up on some updates to this blog, mostly updating some older code and such. As you can see, Snowball was so excited to watch she could hardly contain herself. I’ve spent a good deal of my “spare” time in the last few weeks working on renewing some of my IT certifications, got all this completed yesterday so I’ll take a day or so off before studying for the next round of tests.
Back up your data
My old desktop is getting a little long in the tooth, I’ve been nursing it along for quite a while and have decided to retire it. I’ve been using an iMac at home for several years but when I looked at the cost of replacing it with an equivalent machine I decided to go back to Linux as my home operating system and build my own machine. I use Windows machines at work but in my field it helps to stay familiar with all of the major operating systems. I do keep backups of my data so I won’t lose anything but I’m running the replacement system for a while to make sure I have all the applications I need since I’ll have to move to open source products for several of them on my Linux machine. This leads me in to today’s public service announcement, please back up your data, in more than one place if possible. Those of us who work in this field say this so often that it seems like we are ending most of our conversations with people with a reminder to do backups. Hardly a week goes by that I get a computer for repair with a failing or damaged hard drive and the owner is distraught over losing all their valuable photos, documents, music, etc. If you aren’t sure how to do a backup, a quick search of the internet will point you to several options.
Next week
Lynn is flying back to Galena tomorrow and we should be getting back into a somewhat normal routine. Still promises to be a bit on the chilly side but this is Alaska after all.
That’s all for now, stay warm!
