Warm winter
This weeks weather didn’t really lend itself to much in the way of photography. Snowball wasn’t too happy about it either as you can tell by her expression. Mostly ice fog, so much in fact that flights in and out of Galena were cancelled at times. To be sure I would rather cancel a flight rather than run the risk of problems associated with the weather myself. The weather has also continued to be warm for this time of year. Only dipping below zero for a few hours at a time. Today it is up near freezing which just makes the roads that much more hazardous to drive on. Blowing snow in the afternoon and the flat light that comes with overcast skies this time of year prompted me to start doing most of my runs in the early morning.
Earthquake!
Friday morning was a pretty typical day for me. Got in to work and started going through my usual routine and then I started getting messages about a large earthquake in Anchorage. For those not familiar with Alaska and our location in general, Galena is about 350 miles or so north of Anchorage. Even so, Lynn and several teachers and administrators at the school where she works felt some swaying in the school building. I did not, but will attribute that to the fact the building they are in is sitting on pilings, and the one I work in is on a conventional concrete slab. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, I’m sure someone with an engineering background can tell me if thats the case. As I’m sure everyone is aware of by this time, there was a magnitude 7.0 or greater earthquake near Anchorage that resulted in a lot of infrastructure damage to roads and bridges, but as far as I know there was no loss of life. There were several aftershocks that day and I have heard that they will continue for quite some time. On top of that they are facing a pretty significant winter storm today that is sure to complicate recovery and repair activities. For anyone who wants to know more about the earthquakes and seismic activity in Alaska, the best source I know of is at this link https://earthquake.alaska.edu/earthquakes.
Thats about all I have for now. Spent the morning clearing snow from the driveway, I’ll probably get out and do my scheduled run for today later this evening. In the mean time stay warm and stay safe.
