Breakup
Most towns have some sort of hazard that threatens them. In the South and Midwest you have tornado’s, hurricanes threaten Florida and the Gulf coast. Here in Galena we have breakup and forest fire season. It gets cold here in the winter but you can prepare for it. Breakup, on the other hand can be pretty benign at times, but sometimes it is incredibly destructive. This year it looks like we have been pretty lucky so far. The ice wasn’t particularly thick to start with and the temperature gradually warmed allowing the ice to rot before it went out. Things can always change, but so far the ice is running good and the water level hasn’t come up a great deal. We are keeping an eye on it but so far so good.
Community Events
As usual, the week before graduation was very busy in Galena. The aviation program had their annual open house, the community flea market was held on Saturday along with a mothers day brunch. Yesterday we celebrated Sidney Huntington’s 100th birthday. Sidney is an amazing man and has been a major force in shaping Galena, especially the importance of education to the community. The celebration was held in the school gym and it was packed. Lots of speeches and a good time was had by all.
Lynn update
Lynn’s wrist is getting better although it is still sore most of the time. Anytime the weather changes she can feel it. She is still doing her exercises and is due to visit the doctor again on the week after graduation.
