They put the tripod up near the pilings a few days ago. When breakup gets closer they will attach a timer to the line coming from the tripod. As soon as the ice moves the timer will trip so we will know the exact time that breakup starts here.

Ducks have returned
Since the ice has started to melt there are ducks on almost every patch of open water. This is one of the few places around where it is common to use a snowmachine for duck hunting.

Yukon River on 12 May
Last year this time we were almost at breakup. The ice has dropped a little and we are starting to get some water along the sides. Maybe a couple of weeks till breakup.
Alexander Lake on 4 May
This is a photo of Alexander Lake taken today when Snowball and I were out for a walk. The ice is still pretty thick and Fish and Wildlife is still using it for a landing strip for their ski equipped planes. As you can tell from the tracks it is also a popular snowmachine route.
Yukon River on 4 May
Here is the a photo of the Yukon taken today. Last year this time the ice was thinning out and we were getting close to breakup. Obviously this isn’t the case this year.
